Pulling the pan is required if I'm going to put a pre-72 timing set on it. Away we go:

Radiator with homemade catcher pan:
Turns out I didn't need to do this. Now, how do I get my water pump pulley mount back where it belongs?
*Update* I just bought a new water pump. Reason: 40 years old. Also, not that spendy.
How to pull the harmonic balancer bolt:
Sure is filthy under there.
Pan dropped and gears off.
Bad pic, but you can see the pan is hung up. Stabilizer bar has been removed, but still no dice. Next I will try the idler arm as per the forum.
*Update*
Got the idler arm unbolted from the frame and it made enough room for the pan to drop down. I had the car on jack stands, so the tires could move easily once the idler arm was loose.
The starter had to be loosened to get at a few of the pan bolts. It didn't have to come completely out though.
Looks a little sludgy
That's a dirty pan.
I used my redneck skills to hold the old exhaust pipe out of the way.
